Why does exercise make me feel so good?

Why does exercise make me feel so good?

We’re in unprecedented times. Unprecedented – that word again, that we’d never used in a sentence until a couple of months ago. We’re stuck at home, with nothing to keep our minds occupied, and no real way of letting off steam with friends and family.

How have you kept sane throughout the lockdown?

For us, it’s the ability to be able to work out every day, either from home, or outdoors. Did you know that people that do regular exercise are 17% less likely to suffer from depression than people that don’t work out.

Why does working out make me feel happy?

Exercise is a natural anti-depressant – with the endorphins released during your workouts, you may feel less stressed, tense and anxious. A study done on mice proved that the release of endorphins made the mice feel less anxious in general.

So as well as releasing endorphins in the brain, your physical activity helps to relax your muscles, and relieve the tension – that’s no doubt been building up –  throughout your body. And remember, your body and mind are linked so closely, that when your body feels good, your mind will feel even better.

What other benefits are there?

You may find you’ve been having broken sleep recently. If you make your workout a daily occurrence, you might see an improvement in your sleep pattern. This, in turn, will increase your mental alertness, as well as your memory!

If you prefer to exercise in the evening, try and stick to yoga, meditation, or an activity that won’t raise your heart-rate quite as much before bed.
With more regular exercise comes prolonged energy. Whether this is in your workouts, with friends, or even between the sheets, you’ll certainly feel a new lease of life in a short amount of time.

If you’re exercising to lose weight, your self-esteem might shoot through the roof, once you’re happier with your body. As well as this, you’ll be decreasing the risk of illnesses including heart and lung disease, Alzheimers, Parkinson’s and Dementia, and even cancer.

So what are you waiting for? With so much proof that exercise makes you happy, get those running shoes on, or get ready for a workout with one of our trainers!

As always, stay fit and healthy.
