5 foods that help you fully concentrate while at work

How important is what you eat? Do you think it matters? Well, we’re here to tell you that it does and it matters greatly. This is backed by studies that show poor nutrition can lead to 50% more sick days each year, which can have a big impact on your bottom line.

At BUA FIT, our corporate wellness programs  include training on nutrition for this very reason, as it’s easily as important as the exercise classes that we offer. Ideally, people should be active AND enjoy a good diet, so it would be wise to focus on what gets eaten each day.

In this article, we’ll be looking at the impact a good diet can have on your employees, focusing on five foods that improve concentration and cognitive function. By reading on, you’ll see that what you put in your body can help or hinder you during your working day.

Food #1 – blueberries

Representing one of the many superfoods that exist, blueberries offer a range of cognitive benefits due to their being packed with nutrients and antioxidants. Protecting the body from free radical damage, blueberries are low in calories and support improved communication between brain cells – meaning sharper thought – and reduce the risk of brain ageing

Food #2 – fatty fish

As our wellness program nutrition training shows, the public perception of fish being a ‘brain food‘ is right on the money. While most types of fish are beneficial, it’s the fattier kind that contains the most brain-supporting omega-3 fatty acids that are proven to enhance a person’s memory and concentration. Eat it twice a week, and you should see a difference.

Food #3 – nuts

Another food group that’s packed with omega-3 fatty acids are nuts. Also containing selenium, zinc, manganese and copper – all nutrients vital for good healthy brain function – nuts are also associated with improved mood. They’re tasty and satisfying too, making them an ideal afternoon snack that won’t fatigue you one iota.

Food #4 – eggs

Choline is another nutrient that’s great for fighting cognitive decline by reducing the type of inflammation commonly associated with degenerative brain diseases like Alzheimer’s. This tasty option is also known to help promote proper sleep patterns through the provision of tryptophan – a chemical that results in the production of sleep-inducing serotonin.

Food #5 – leafy greens

Corporate wellness programs also teach us that leafy greens are great for focus and concentration as they’re rich in nitrate, phylloquinone, lutein and nitrate. Options include spinach, broccoli, lettuce and kale, which, when added to a chicken breast, make rather a nice midday meal that will keep you energised and focused all day long.
