Thanks to their economic significance in the civilised world, you’ll find rivers at the heart of most of the UK’s cities, however, there are few quite as famous (or as long) as our very own, River Thames. The 215-mile giant is peppered with a number of green and serene riverside parks and spaces that make for some incredibly calming and scenic workout spots. Try one of these stunning riverside locations for your next outdoor workout…
Battersea Park, Battersea (obviously!)
Battersea Park occupies a whopping three-quarters of a mile of the Thames Riverbank, making it one of London’s largest riverside parks. Whether you’re boxercising beneath the great oaks, doing yoga in the sub-tropical garden or jogging along one of the park’s many colour-coded running routes, there’s room for everyone at Battersea Park. Well worth a visit, particularly as we approach the warmer months.
Bishop’s Park, Putney
Easily reachable for anyone in surrounding areas such as Fulham, Richmond, Hammersmith, Barnes etc., Bishop’s Park is a beautiful patch of green space offering stunning views of Putney Bridge and the Thames below. Workout in the spacious, well-kept park, or follow the running trail all the way through to Chiswick if jogging is more your thing. Putney is also the base for many of London’s rowing clubs and is the starting point for the University Boat Race, making it a good place to relax and watch the rowing practice post-workout.
Jubilee Gardens, Southbank
The Jubilee Gardens were first constructed to celebrate the Queen’s Silver Jubilee (hence the name), and are famed for their views of the London Eye and the Houses of Parliament. It’s a great spot for those in Central London looking to workout outdoors and alongside some stunning views of the Thames, however, whilst the views and the atmosphere are great, this isn’t the most tranquil patch of green in the capital city. Perhaps a little more suited to the more intense forms of working out as opposed to your Yoga and Pilates classes.
Potters Fields, Southwark
This particular patch of green spaces offers up unrivalled views of the only bridge in London that we can actually remember the name of – Tower Bridge. A surprisingly serene oasis of calm in what is a fairly busy area of the capital. It’s easily reachable for those working in The City, making it a good candidate for those after-work personal training sessions, and a great option for any personal trainers looking for a spot close to the river and the workforce of London’s financial district.
So, why not make the most of all that London has to offer and try an outdoor, riverside workout this Spring. And, as always, stay fit and healthy!
