It’s hard to be consistent. It’s easy to give up.
It’s also the attitude that will ensure that you can never become the best version of yourself, and find it impossible to reach any goals you set yourself for 2021 and beyond.
“But what do I DO when I feel like giving up?”, we hear you cry.
Here’s what we remember when we want to give up (because it happens to all of us):
Your mind. Your choice.
You’re in control of your mind and your choices, Not us. Not your friends. Not celebrities. You.
If your mind is suggesting that you might be tired, and not have any energy to exercise, take a step back. If your mind can offer those suggestions, it will most certainly also offer the alternative suggestion – ‘Actually I could go for a run. Or even a walk. Or maybe just do ten minutes of core work at home in the warm’.
Once you consider the thought processes in your mind as suggestions, you’ll see them as options rather than obligations.
Pain is temporary
…And pride is forever. That 20 minute run might feel hellish, but what’s 20 minutes out of 24 hours? It’s a change – a positive change – in your life, that you’re making. Use these few minutes of discomfort to enable you to grow and strengthen.
And let’s be honest – have you ever regretted a hard workout once it’s finished?
Make it a habit
Cue. Craving. Response. Reward. This is the habit loop.
The cue – step 1 – triggers your brain to initiate a behavior. The cue offers you information which predicts the outcome to be a reward.
Step 2 are the cravings. Cravings are the driving and motivational force behind every habit. Without some level of motivation or desire—without craving a change—we have no reason to act.
The response – step 3 – is the actual habit you perform. This can take the form of a thought or an action.
Finally, the response delivers a reward – step 4. Rewards are the end goal of every habit.
The cue is when you notice the reward. The craving is about wanting the reward. The response is about obtaining the reward. The first purpose of rewards is to satisfy your craving, which ultimately allows you to create automatic habits.
So whatever you do this year, make sure your mindset and motivation are aimed towards giving you the best possible chance of success.
As always, stay fit and healthy.
