Find out what workout works for you

A 2021 study by Cambridge Ruskin University finds that up to 72% of the difference between people’s workout outcomes whilst undertaking the same exercise regime is due to genetics.

Muscle strength, cardiovascular fitness, and anaerobic power were examined as factors influencing an individual’s fitness, well-being, and quality of life. Every single participant showed improvements following their exercise training, but to varying degrees, even when performing the same exercise training.

The study proved that genetic differences are responsible for 72% of the variation in outcomes for people following identical exercises designed to improve muscle strength i.e. genetics played a huge part in who became strongest fastest. 44% of the differences were due to genetic make-up when participants followed a regime designed to boost their cardiovascular health. Only 10% of the differences in the outcomes were attributed to genetic variation when exercises for anaerobic power were undertaken. Anaerobic power is a great measure of movement and agility.

This highlights the importance of doing a variety of exercises to find a workout that works for you and your genetic make-up. Gene testing will hold the key to tailoring exercise effectively, but until then jump in and search for what makes you feel good now.
