Can the physical stress of exercise provide mental relief? Alexander Pope thought so, “Strength of mind is exercise, not rest.” Plato went further, “Exercise would cure a guilty conscience.” So, when you finish work, don’t slump into your couch, get out and work out. Regular exercise will exhilarate and relax. Known to take the edges off anxiety disorders and clinical depression, exercise reduces adrenaline and cortisol – the body’s stress hormones. They are replaced by endorphins – natural painkillers and responsible for that superhuman feeling that pumps through your body when you finish a workout. Aside from the neurochemical effects, exercise improves the mastery of your own body – you’ll move more and move better. Almost any form of exercise will help you relax and make you feel better.
